Ron Paul (R-TX) has just raised almost $6 million in less than 24 hours, beating his previous record of $4.3 million in one day, back on Novemeber 5. From THE WASHINGTON POST's blog, The Trail:

"Paul's online popularity, to the surprise (and envy) of other Republican campaigns, proves to be one of the most fascinating fundraising stories of the year. He's the only candidate, Republican or Democrat, to increase his fundraising haul with every quarter, raising $640,000 in the first quarter, $2.4 million in the second, $5.1 million in the third. And more than two-thirds of the money, his aides say, has consistently come from the Internet."

In 2002, before the invasion of Iraq, Congressman Ron Paul (R -TX) appeared on NOW WITH BILL MOYERS and explained why he was not yet convinced that an invasion was necessary and justified:

"Well, I think that President Kennedy gave us a pretty good idea of what we should do. He had to deal with some tough times.

As a matter of fact, the various presidents had to deal with the Soviets. They had 50,000 nuclear warheads, and they had tremendous power, and they brought them 90 miles off our shore. And not once did we think that confrontation was a good idea."

In 2004 Bill Moyers talked with FOX News host Cal Thomas about the cultural values dividing America in an election year.

"Homosexuality, abortion, divorce, drugs, pornography, the long list of cultural ills that are properly trumpeted as indications of decay by many of my brethren on the right are not the cause of our decadence. They're a reflection of it."

Cal Thomas is America's most widely syndicated op-ed columnist. 540 newspapers in the United States and abroad carry the column, now syndicated by Tribune Media Services in Chicago. For sixteen years his column was distributed by the Los Angeles Times Syndicate.

Thomas began his nearly 40-year journalism career as a copyboy for NBC News in his native Washington, D.C. He also has worked as a general assignment reporter and anchor for KPRC-TV in Houston and for NBC News in Washington.

For two years he hosted his own show on CNBC. It was nominated for a Cable Ace award as the best interview program on cable. He is a commentator/analyst for the Fox News Channel and appears weekly as a panelist on FOX NEWS WATCH.

Thomas is an author of ten books, including BLINDED BY MIGHT: WHY THE RELIGIOUS RIGHT CAN'T SAVE AMERICA. His latest is, THE WIT AND WISDOM OF CAL THOMAS.

In 2003 author Susan Sontag appeared on NOW WITH BILL MOYERS and discussed her experiences and writings about war.

"I think you have to factor in the complacency and the fearfulness of fortress America. That there are large parts of the world, there are large parts of the world in which we couldn't be having this discussion. Which we wouldn't have to say, "You know, pictures can tell us that terrible things happen in the world." Because your life is telling you that terrible things happen."

Among Ms. Sontag's many honors include the 2003 Peace Prize of the German Book Trade, the 2003 Prince of Asturias Prize, the 2001 Jerusalem Prize, the National Book Award for In America (2000), and the National Book Critics Circle Award for On Photography (1978). In 1992 she received the Malaparte Prize in Italy, and in 1999 she was named a Commandeur de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government (she had been named an Officier in the same order in 1984). Between 1990 and 1995 she was a MacArthur Fellow.

Ms. Sontag died in New York City on December 28, 2004.

Tu Wei-Ming was born in mainland China, studied in Taiwan, and pursued an academic career in America at Princeton University and the University of California at Berkeley. Now professor of Chinese history and philosophy at Harvard Uninversity, he teaches and writes about Confucianism, the ancient Chinese system of ethics, and its relationship to the modern world.

In Tu's view, the ways in which this humanistic philosophy of the East meshes with Western technology and democratic values tell us much about the future of China and industrial East Asia, and about our survival on an endangered planet.

He returns to China regularly to lecture on Confucian thought.

While investigating the state of Katrina recovery in Gulf Coast Mississippi JOURNAL producer William Brangham came across the story of the historic black settlement of Turkey Creek — and a filmmaker dedicated to telling it's story — Leah Mahan.

Founded by freed slaves in 1866, Turkey Creek thrived for generations but facing environmental and preservation challenges even before the disaster. While Turkey Creek is on the National Register of Historic Places, Mississippi Heritage has put the community and environs on its list of most endangered sites for 2007.
